They don’t simply glow. They flash. Tiny green lanterns floating through the night.

Even now, in my second summer, I still find myself standing outside like a little kid each evening they appear. That beautiful flashing light isn’t simply something pretty to look at. It is the firefly’s language. Those flashes are courtship signals. Each species has its own unique pattern of flashes. Males fly through the darkness sending out their signal while females wait in the grass or on low vegetation, responding only to the pattern of their own species. It’s a remarkable conversation taking place every summer evening, one that most of us never notice. When we see hundreds of tiny lights blinking across a meadow, we are witnessing

one of nature’s oldest mating rituals. The adult firefly may only live for a few short weeks, but those few evenings we spend watching them represent years of growth hidden beneath our feet.

Last summer, I spent several evenings trying to photograph them. Most nights found me standing at the ends of quiet country roads along the edges of pastures and fields, near creeks and drainage ditches, waiting for the sun to sink below the horizon. As dusk settled in, I watched the tiny insects climb to the tips of sedges, switchgrass, and bottlebrush. They would pause, flash their brilliant green light, and then lift silently into the air. Once airborne they were almost impossible to follow.

Mating pair of fireflies

On one particularly memorable evening, I was fortunate enough to discover a mating pair. I quietly watched and filmed them, realizing I was witnessing the very purpose behind those magical flashes. What had first seemed like little floating green lanterns were, in reality, tiny lives carrying out an ancient ritual that has been repeated on summer evenings for millions of years.

As the summer went on, I heard story after story from people who had grown up here. Nearly everyone had a memory of chasing fireflies as a child, catching them in jars with a little grass in the bottom and holes punched in the lid. Several people told me that last year’s emergence reminded them of those childhood summers. Listening to those stories made me realize that fireflies are more than just another insect. They are woven into people’s memories, a connection to childhood that deserves to be passed on to future generations.

Sadly, many firefly populations are declining. Habitat loss has removed the tall grasses, woodland edges, wetlands, and other moist places they need to complete their life cycle. Artificial light from homes, businesses, and streetlights interferes with the flashes they use to find one another and reproduce. Pesticides can kill both adults and the larvae, which spend one to two years living in the soil and leaf litter, feeding on snails, slugs, worms, and other small invertebrates before emerging as adults.

Each green dot and swoosh represents a firefly in mating mode!

The good news is that there are simple things we can do to help. Leaving patches of native grasses, reducing unnecessary outdoor lighting during the summer months, and limiting pesticide use can make our yards and natural areas more welcoming to these remarkable insects. With a little care, we can help ensure that future generations will experience the same wonder of standing beneath a warm summer sky, watching tiny lights drift silently through the darkness.

As a nature photographer, I often head into the field with a camera in hand, hoping to capture moments like these. But fireflies have reminded me that not every encounter with nature needs to become a photograph. Sometimes it’s enough to simply stand quietly in the fading light and watch.

Our lives move at such a hurried pace that it’s easy to overlook small wonders like these. Yet for a few brief weeks each summer, fireflies remind us that nature still has the power to fill us with the same sense of awe we felt as children. I hope we never lose that sense of wonder, because I suspect that’s where conservation begins.
